Amazon launches first same-day delivery hub in Louisiana, boosting New Orleans logistics

Amazon has switched on its first same-day delivery site in Louisiana, a 150,000-square-foot facility on Mounes Street near Dickory Avenue in Elmwood. The operation brings rapid fulfillment, sorting, and delivery under one roof for the greater New Orleans area, pairing advanced robotics with a growing team that already tops 80 employees.

The Elmwood site is part of Amazon’s broader push to expand ultra-fast delivery; the company now counts more than 140 same-day locations nationwide and plans to roughly double that footprint. Local leadership said the New Orleans launch combines new jobs with added convenience for shoppers, with hiring continuing as the facility ramps.

Approved last year with an estimated price tag of $30 million, the operation will rely on several hundred drivers each day, with routes capped at about 50 packages per vehicle. To ease traffic, Amazon agreed to stagger peak dispatch windows between 1–3 a.m. and 1–3 p.m., and to limit on-site driver counts to no more than 60 at any one time. The company expects the Elmwood hub to move more than 38,000 items across its catalog.

The property—purchased just outside Harahan in 2021—was originally slated as overflow parking for existing local operations before plans shifted to a same-day hub. Regional economic developers praised the investment, framing it as a vote of confidence in Jefferson Parish’s logistics corridor and a foundation for future growth.

The opening follows another milestone on the Northshore: a $40 million delivery center in Slidell that handles next-day and two-day shipments. Statewide, Amazon’s Louisiana footprint includes four fulfillment and sortation centers, six delivery stations, seven Whole Foods Market locations, and two solar farms.

Since 2010, Amazon reports investing more than $3 billion and creating over 6,000 jobs in Louisiana—momentum the company aims to accelerate with the Elmwood launch.
