Classic Lava Rock A Timeless Media
Lava rock is a perfect media to use in a firepit because it withstands extremely high temperatures. These rocks can be used on their own as a focal point of your firepit or a base layer underneath fire glass. Lava rock is not only a perfect fire media but is also used in landscaping, gardening and even aquariums.
It is naturally occurring and is formed from volcanic magma. The volcanic magma comes to the earth’s surface and starts to cool creating the lava rock. The natural process magma goes through when cooling allows the lava rock to withstand such high temperatures.
This natural rock gets its coarse surface from its formation process. When it starts to cool it gives off gases which in turn makes the lava rock coarse. As the magma cools, the rocks release gas bubbles that form a coarse, rough surface around the rock.
American Fire Glass has several different-sized lava rocks. The small lava rock with is a quarter-inch and a half-inch is very versatile. It can be used as a base for other media such as fire glass, life stone balls or lite stones. The medium lava rock is a little larger than the small lava rock and comes in a half-inch or three-quarter-inch size. It can be used on its own or is a great base for tumbled lava. The xx-large lava is the largest and comes in four-inch to six-inch sizes. This lava rock is not used as a standalone fire feature but must also be used with smaller lava rock. The smaller lava rock is the base while the xx-large lava rock is on top giving the fire a designed look.
