Patios Are Becoming More Prevalent in New Construction Homes
The National Association of Home Builders’ Eye on Housing reported that new construction homes with patios went up in 2020 to 61.4%. According to the report, around 990,000 single-family homes that were started in 2020 had patios. These figures were reported in the NAHB’s Survey of Construction.
This is the fifth consecutive year that new homes with patios are reported as a record high. Although they hit a record high, the new home starts with patios were not as prevalent in some of the U.S. regions. The lowest share of single-family homes with patios started in 2020 was seen in Middle Atlantic with only 19%. The highest seen was in the Mountain region at 74%. The remaining regions were West South Central with 73%, South Atlantic with 67%, Pacific with 59%, East North Central with 47%, East South Central and West North Central both with 41% and New England with 21%.
Another survey called the Annual Builder Practices Survey (BPS) which is produced by Home Innovation Research Labs also surveys new homes with patios with a little more detail. They do, however, exclude pool decks in the patio category.
The 2021 BPS reported that the average size of the patio that is on the new single-family home starts was around 278 square feet. This number did vary from region to region. In the Middle Atlantic, the average patio was 350 square feet, in the East North Central and Pacific, it was also 350 square feet. The smallest was seen in East South Central that was under 200 square feet. The materials used most were poured concrete, concrete and brick pavers.
