St. Tammany Parish Library System Takes Part in National Library Week
Across the United States, next week Libraries will celebrate National Library Week. The last year has been hard for everyone with the COVID-19 pandemic. Libraries have been going through a huge process to adapt to our changing world due to the pandemic. St. Tammany Parish Library System has been doing its part in going above and beyond during this hard time to meet the needs of St. Tammany library patrons. The library system has announced that they will be taking part in National Library Week April 5 – 10 and will focus on how much our libraries now extend beyond brick and mortar buildings.
National Library Week’s theme this year is “Welcome to Your Library” and the honorary chair is Natalie Portman. Celebrations throughout the week will include the State of America’s Libraries Report released, including Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books of 2020 on Monday, Tuesday will be National Library Workers Day, National Library Outreach Day will be Wednesday and Take Action for Libraries Day will be on Thursday. The essential roles of libraries, librarians and library workers will be highlighted during this time.
Locally the Food for Fines will be kicked off during this week which runs from April 5 – 17, 2021. This event will help the Northshore Food Bank in Covington, the Samaritan Center Food Bank in Mandeville and the First Baptist Church of Slidell Food Pantry with nonperishable food items. Those who donate will reduce an outstanding library fine by $1.
Another fun event, StoryWalk, is planned for April 5 from 9 am – 4 pm at the Northlake Nature Center in Mandeville. Children and families can come to the center to play, walk, read and discuss the book Down in Louisiana by Johnette Downing. The activities will be socially distanced and the book will be deconstructed and laminated with pictures hung throughout the walking path.
Be sure to check out these fun-filled activities during National Library Week. Along with this event, Friends of the Slidell Library Silent Auction will also take place on April 5th. Come take part in the auction that will include more than 80 books focused on food, cooking techniques, special dietary needs, ethnic cuisine, beverages, and vintage cookbooks.
