Treasure Chest Casino To Move On Land
Treasure Chest casino in Kenner is moving to land. The Treasure Chest casino is currently a floating casino that brings in customers from all over. In fact, around 85% of its customers are from within a 150 mile radius. This February, the construction will begin on a $100 million project that will bring the gambling space onto land.
The new space will double the gambling space of the current Treasure Chest boat and will have four restaurants. There will also be an added 10,000 square feet for conventions, meetings or live entertainment. Parking will be part of the expansion which will open in Spring 2024.
The Treasure Chest casino opened its doors in 1994 with one restaurant and no space for meetings, conventions or live entertainment. Another downfall was that the casino did not offer amenities such as a golf course, swimming pool, spa or hotel. Patrons do have the Hilton Garden Inn close by for accommodation.
“We’re just excited to be on land. We’re happy to be in Kenner, to be where we are . We’re a neighborhood casino,” says owner, Las Vega-based Boyd Gaming Corp.
Gambling was legalized in 1991 in the state of Louisiana but it was only approved for a certain number of paddlewheel casinos. Originally the boats were supposed to go out into the rivers, but that did not happen on a regular basis. Therefore in 2018 it was put into law that casinos could move onto land.
The Treasure Chest casino will be the third in line to move onto land. Kenner residents and leaders are behind the Treasure Chest casino. The casino gave $20.9 million in taxes and $3.3 million in city fees to Kenner. The casino employs 244 people in the area that brings in $11.8 million in payroll.
