Brick that Tells a Story

Brick is one of those materials that instantly changes the mood of a room. It brings texture, warmth, and a little bit of history—especially when the bricks themselves have lived another life. Because it comes in so many colors and takes beautifully to limewash, paint, and patina, brick slips easily into nearly any design style. I can’t think of a look where it wouldn’t feel right at home.

When we moved into our House on a Sugar Hill, I was thrilled to find a brick fireplace in the living room. The only catch was the dated, very dark red tone. It didn’t match the clean, airy direction I wanted for the renovation. I still loved the character of the brick, so a cosmetic refresh felt like the best of both worlds.

We started with a soft whitewash to keep some of the natural variation. It’s a great first step if you’re not ready for solid paint. Our mix was simple, one part white acrylic paint to three parts water. Using a bristle brush, we worked the wash into the face and mortar, then softened areas with a damp cloth for a weathered effect.

After living with it for a few weeks, those remaining red undertones kept catching my eye. I added a couple more passes of the whitewash, which muted the color further, but in the end I realized I was craving a crisp, fully painted finish. I committed to solid white, and I’ve loved the look ever since.

Prep made all the difference. Before any coating, we scrubbed away soot and grime, then rolled on a stain-blocking masonry primer to keep future discoloration from bleeding through. For the topcoat, we chose an interior latex rated for higher temperatures and suitable for masonry. Whatever product you pick, follow the manufacturer’s guidance for prep, primer, and cure times. We left the firebox its original black; painted fireboxes are decorative only and should not be used for burning.

Application was easiest with a bristle brush. Quick dabbing strokes helped push paint into the mortar joints and crevices that a roller would have missed. Three coats later, the brick read as a glossy, modern white—still classic in silhouette, but fresh and bright.

Styling the mantel was the fun finale. To echo the clean lines while honoring the home’s history, I paired a gilded vintage-style mirror with a modern white vase of dyed pampas. A handful of second-hand books, a simple floral arrangement in an old container, and a single taper candle finished the mix. The fireplace now feels like a statement, equal parts vintage and contemporary with a hint of feminine polish.

If you’re choosing finishes for your next project, don’t overlook brick. It’s timeless, versatile, and surprisingly earth-friendly, made from natural materials with excellent energy performance. With the right treatment, it can carry a space with character and charm for years to come.
